In January 2017 the school introduced a new maths challenge.

Image result for maths symbols clip artImage result for maths symbols clip artThe new Dundonald Maths Challenges are designed so that mental strategies for all four operations (+, -, :, x) are now tested at every level in order to practise the mental maths skills children need at each stage of the new National Curriculum.

The new challenge levels are called 'plus' colours ('green plus', 'bronze plus' and so on) and slot in between each colour and the next. This means that, whatever level the children were on previously, they will need to complete the colour challenges corresponding to the curriculum for their year group before progressing on to the next level.

For example, Year 4 will correspond to Silver and Silver plus. In Year 4, children are expected to 'recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x12' so the Silver certificate will feature questions such as 7 x 9 and 64 :8. Another Year 4 National curriculum objective is to 'use place value, known and derived facts to multiply and divide mentally' so Silver plus will feature questions such as: 60 x 8 or 720 : 9.
We hope this added element of challenge will help to motivate the children as well as improve their mental maths abilities. Any opportunities you can provide at home to practise with your child will be greatly appreciated and practise sheets for each challenge can be found here:
